Chlorine
A gas widely used in the disinfection of water, and as an
oxidizing agent for organic matter, manganese, iron, and hydrogen
sulfide. Chlorine is known to react with organic matter in the
water to form trihalomethanes (THM's), which are suspected carcinogens.
